Mommy Makeover

A mommy makeover combines a tummy tuck, usually with repair of the separated rectus muscles, and breast surgery in one operation, often with liposuction and sometimes labiaplasty. ASPS describes it as typically performed as a single-stage procedure to restore the body after childbearing.

What mommy makeover changes

ASPS lists the procedures in a mommy makeover as tummy tuck, liposuction, breast augmentation, breast lift, labiaplasty and buttock augmentation. The areas treated most are the breasts, abdomen, waist, genitalia and buttocks.

The tummy tuck removes excess skin and fat and in most cases restores weakened or separated muscles. The breast part is an augmentation, a lift, a lift with implants, or a reduction.

Abdominoplasty and breast surgery are combined often enough that the term mommy makeover entered common use. In the CosmetAssure database, 16,503 of 25,478 abdominoplasties from 2008 to 2013 were done with other procedures.

ASPS member surgeons performed 171,064 tummy tucks, 306,196 breast augmentations, 153,616 breast lifts and 349,728 liposuctions in 2024. ASPS does not publish a separate count for mommy makeovers.

What it changes

  • Loose abdominal skin and fat after pregnancy
  • Separation of the rectus muscles (diastasis) after pregnancy
  • Breast ptosis, or sagging, after pregnancy
  • Loss or change of breast volume after pregnancy
  • Localized fat of the flanks and waist

What it does not change

  • A tummy tuck is not a substitute for weight loss or an exercise program.
  • A tummy tuck cannot correct stretch marks; stretch marks on the skin that is cut away are removed or improved.
  • Results can be greatly reduced by large changes in weight.
  • It does not protect the result from a later pregnancy: ASPS advises women considering future pregnancies to postpone a tummy tuck.
  • Combining operations does not lower the risk of each one: complication rates rise with added procedures in insurance data.
