Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is surgery that reshapes the nose and can also correct breathing problems caused by its structure. In a 2025 meta-analysis of 1,067 patients, open and closed rhinoplasty showed no difference in satisfaction, breathing scores or complication rates.

What rhinoplasty changes

Rhinoplasty changes the size, bridge, tip and nostrils of the nose. It can also correct impaired breathing, and straightening a deviated septum is one of the most common ways it does so.

The surgeon works through incisions hidden inside the nose (closed) or adds an incision across the columella, the strip of tissue between the nostrils (open). The skin is raised off the bone and cartilage, which are reduced, reshaped or built up with cartilage grafts, most often from the septum, sometimes from the ear and rarely from a rib.

Septorhinoplasty combines reshaping with septum surgery. In a prospective study of 567 patients, nasal obstruction scores fell after functional septorhinoplasty and stayed lower through at least 24 months.

Non-surgical rhinoplasty injects filler under the nasal skin and is temporary. The FDA lists injection of the nose as a use of dermal fillers it has not approved, and the nose was the site in 40.6% of 365 reported cases of vision loss after filler published from 2018 to 2023.

What it changes

  • Nose size out of balance with the face
  • Width at the bridge, or large, wide or upturned nostrils
  • Humps or depressions on the bridge in profile
  • A tip that is enlarged, bulbous, drooping, upturned or hooked
  • Asymmetry, and breathing blocked by a deviated septum

What it does not change

  • Make the nose perfectly symmetric. Every face is asymmetric to some degree.
  • Suit a patient whose facial growth is not complete.
  • Show the final shape right away. The contour can take up to a year to refine.
  • Treat body dysmorphic disorder, found in a pooled 32.7% of rhinoplasty candidates.
  • Last when done with filler. Non-surgical rhinoplasty is a temporary alternative to surgery.
