The treatment
Nonsurgical fat reduction treats a fat bulge without an incision. ASPS groups it as cryolipolysis (CoolSculpting), injection lipolysis (Kybella), radiofrequency lipolysis (Vanquish) and laser lipolysis (SculpSure).
The devices act through the skin. Cold or heat destroys fat cells, and the body clears them over the following months. After cryolipolysis, the fat layer thins over 2 to 4 months.
Kybella is a drug, deoxycholic acid, injected into fat under the chin. FDA approved it on April 29, 2015. It destroys the fat cell membrane.
Muscle devices such as Emsculpt use a magnetic field to contract the muscle under the applicator. Emsculpt NEO adds radiofrequency heating of the fat in the same session.
