What patients ask

How long does skin tightening last?

Microfocused ultrasound improvement continued up to 1 year in pooled studies, with no longer-term data. AAD says radiofrequency results can last 2 to 3 years with the right skin care.[1][2]

When will I see results?

After one ultrasound treatment, most people see modest lifting in 2 to 6 months. Noninvasive radiofrequency gives some tightening right away, with the best results in about 6 months. Minimally invasive radiofrequency shows results in about 1 month.[1]

What is the difference between Ultherapy and Thermage?

Ultherapy uses focused ultrasound with imaging at depths of 1.5 to 4.5 mm, reaching the SMAS. Thermage uses monopolar radiofrequency with cryogen cooling to heat the dermis. Ultherapy is cleared to lift the brow, neck and submental tissue; Thermage is cleared for wrinkles.[1][2][3]

Is Sofwave the same as Ultherapy?

No. Sofwave uses parallel, non-focused beams at a fixed depth of 1.5 mm in the mid-dermis. Ultherapy focuses ultrasound at depths from 1.5 to 4.5 mm. Both are cleared for eyebrow lift and lax submental and neck tissue.[1][2][3]

Is Renuvion safe?

The FDA warned against its use for dermal resurfacing and skin contraction in March 2022, then cleared specific handpieces from May 2022 to April 2023. A 2026 meta-analysis of 3,508 patients pooled complications at 5% to 8%. A 2025 review found FDA reports of 15 life-threatening events and 3 deaths.[1][2][3]

Does skin tightening hurt?

Yes, moderately. Pooled pain after microfocused ultrasound averaged 4.85 out of 10, and parallel ultrasound averaged 5.6 and 6.64 in two studies. Pain medication may be topical, oral or intravenous.[1][2][3]

How many treatments do I need?

Most people have one radiofrequency treatment, and some benefit from more. Laser tightening takes 3 to 5 treatments. More ultrasound treatments may give more benefit.[1]

Who is a good candidate?

People with a small amount of sagging skin who keep a healthy weight, do not smoke and protect their skin from the sun. In ultrasound studies, results declined with more laxity and with BMI over 30.[1][2]

Can skin tightening replace a facelift?

No. Minimally invasive radiofrequency gives more noticeable results than noninvasive devices but does not equal a surgical lift. With a lot of sagging skin, skin tightening may not help.[1][2]

Is skin tightening safe for darker skin?

AAD considers noninvasive skin tightening safe for all skin colors. The Renuvion Dermal handpiece is cleared only for Fitzpatrick skin types I, II and III.[1][2]
