Treatment areas

Each treatment area is a muscle or muscle group. FDA labels name the muscle for each approved area. Areas not on a label are off-label uses.

Area by area

Where it is injected

1. Frown lines (glabellar lines)

Muscles: corrugator and procerus. FDA-approved, and the only cosmetic area on the Daxxify and Letybo labels. The Botox Cosmetic dose is 20 units: 2 injections in each corrugator and 1 in the procerus.[1][2][3]

2. Forehead lines

Muscle: frontalis. FDA-approved for Botox Cosmetic in 2017 and on the Xeomin label. Botox Cosmetic treats 20 units in the forehead together with 20 units in the frown lines to reduce the chance of a dropped brow.[1][2][3]

3. Crow's feet (lateral canthal lines)

Muscle: the outer orbicularis oculi. FDA-approved for Botox Cosmetic in 2013 and on the Xeomin label. The Botox Cosmetic dose is 24 units, 12 per side in 3 sites.[1][2][3]

4. Platysma neck bands

Muscle: platysma. FDA-approved for Botox Cosmetic on October 18, 2024. The dose is 26, 31 or 36 units along the jawline and the bands. At day 14, 32% of treated adults reached minimal or mild bands with at least 2 grades of improvement, against 2% on placebo.[1][2][3]

5. Jawline and necklace lines

Muscle: platysma. Off-label. The Nefertiti lift treats the platysma to sharpen the jawline. Platysma injections can also soften horizontal necklace lines.[1]

6. Masseter (jaw muscle)

Muscle: masseter. Off-label: not an indication on the Botox Cosmetic label. In a phase 3 trial of 72 units, 51% improved by at least 2 grades at day 90, against 2% on placebo, and lower face width narrowed by 5.2 mm. Results held through day 180.[1][2]

7. Lip flip

Muscle: orbicularis oris. Off-label. A systematic review found 4 to 6 units in the upper lip turn the lip outward. Trouble whistling or drinking through a straw resolved within weeks.[1]

8. Chin dimpling

Muscle: mentalis. Off-label. An expert consensus backed treatment for a dimpled, orange-peel chin and an overactive mentalis, at a mean total of 6.5 units in international consensus papers.[1]

9. Downturned mouth corners

Muscle: depressor anguli oris. Off-label. Consensus papers report a mean total of 5.6 units, usually one injection point beside the marionette line.[1][2]
