What patients ask

How long does Botox last?

About 3 to 4 months for frown lines, according to the Botox Cosmetic label. Dysport's label says up to 4 months. Daxxify kept frown lines none or mild for a median of about 24 weeks in its phase 3 trials.[1][2][3]

How soon does Botox start working?

Within 1 to 2 days for most people. In one study, 48% noticed an effect by day 1 and physicians saw onset in all by day 4. The full effect builds through the first week and is measured at day 30.[1][2]

How many units do I need?

Labeled Botox Cosmetic doses are 20 units for frown lines, 24 for crow's feet, 40 for forehead and frown lines together, and 26 to 36 for neck bands. Dysport's frown-line dose is 50 units and Daxxify's is 40.[1][2][3]

What is the difference between Botox, Dysport, Xeomin and the others?

All are botulinum toxin type A. Xeomin and Daxxify contain the neurotoxin without its accessory proteins. Daxxify lasted a median of about 24 weeks for frown lines in its trials. Each brand measures units with its own assay, so units cannot be converted between brands.[1][2][3]

Who should inject Botox?

The Botox Cosmetic label says the physician giving it must understand the anatomy of the muscles treated and any changes from prior surgery. A review found eyelid ptosis more frequent among inexperienced injectors.[1][2]

Can I get Botox while pregnant or breastfeeding?

There are no adequate studies in pregnant women, and no data on the toxin in breast milk. In a 29-year safety database, major birth defects occurred in 0.7% of 152 exposed live births, within general population rates, with little data on later pregnancy.[1][2]

At what age can you start Botox?

The labels are for adults, and safety has not been established in children. Botox Cosmetic was first approved for adults under 65, and Dysport is approved for frown lines in adults under 65. People 65 and older responded less often in trials.[1][2][3]

Can Botox treat neck bands or a wide jaw?

Neck bands: yes, Botox Cosmetic was FDA-approved for platysma bands in October 2024. Jaw: masseter treatment is off-label, though a phase 3 trial of 72 units narrowed the lower face by 5.2 mm on average.[1][2][3]

Can Botox stop working over time?

Rarely. Neutralizing antibodies formed in 0.5% of 5,876 subjects across Botox trials, and in none of the Daxxify phase 3 subjects. The label advises the lowest effective dose at the longest feasible interval.[1][2][3]

What if my eyelid droops after Botox?

Eyelid ptosis followed 2% to 3% of frown-line treatments in trials. It starts 3 to 14 days after injection and resolves as the toxin wears off. Apraclonidine or oxymetazoline eye drops can partly reverse it.[1][2][3]
